This manual outlines the practices and control procedures that should be adopted in order that all aspects of reliability, availability, maintainability and safety (RAMS) can be evaluated and controlled throughout a project/evolution.
The control procedures would co-ordinate the planning, management and integration of all activities that are directed towards achieving reliable and maintainable equipment and should be applied during the design, development and manufacturing phases of the equipment to ensure that the equipment maintains the specified levels of RAMS when introduced into service.
The objective of this manual is therefore to:
- Define the fundamentals of design, manufacture and management that will result in the delivery of reliable, maintainable and safe systems, sub-systems and equipment to the customer.
- Define the factors in design, development, manufacture and use that significantly impact upon the realized RAMS parameters.
- Focus engineering and management attention to the contractual RAMS requirements.
- Advise management throughout the project evolution to all RAMS discrepancies, that could require management decision.
- Implement the integration of RAMS with the overall development plans and project milestones.
- Implement trade-off studies, reliability and maintainability predictions, modeling and demonstrations along with Life Cycle Costing (LCC)
- Define and implement the procedures for failure reporting and analysis, including the collection of data from trials and demonstrations and feedback to the respective Design Authority the failure information, failure analysis and investigation.
- The procedures and techniques discussed in this manual can be applied to units and sub-systems (including software) as well as the complete systems of which they are part.
